Welcome to 8th grade Orange Team Language Arts
I look forward to teaching 8th grade language arts this year to prepare students to enter into the High School next year.  Students should expect to read and write everyday in my classroom.  I hope to perpetuate their love for learning, reading, and a curiosity of the world.  We will work hard, but be rewarded for that hard work by being prepared to take on the high school and the world.

What Are We Currently Working on?
January-February: Holocaust Unit: Students are reading Holocaust texts and analyzing the time period in history.  Students are making historical connections within the texts and following the development of the character throughout based on the trauma each endured. At the end of the unit, the general ELA classes will produce a project analyzing the character in their text and a written reflection defending their project choices.  The advanced class will compose an essay analyzing a motif used throughout the text, Night.

11/9: Students have started their second unit: Dystopian Societies.  In the accelerated class, students are reading Fahrenheit 451 and analyzing the literary devices used throughout in preparation to write a literary analysis essay at the end of the unit.  In the other classes, students will be deconstructing dystopian short stories and writing short analytical pieces working on their writing skills, specifically incorporating strong text evidence and analysis in their writing.  At the end of this unit, students will compose a theme based essay identifying a common thread between multiple stories and analyzing it.

Students are working on vocabulary packet 3 starting on Monday, 11/12 and continue to build their vocabularies as the year progresses.

9/6: Students are currently in their first ELA unit: Moral Choices.  They should be following their student book group created reading schedules, reading each night, in order to be prepared for discussions and classwork each day.  Students should be taking notes based on their readings focusing on character and conflict.  These notes are in preparation to write a character analysis essay at the end of the unit.

Students are also reviewing their List 1 Vocabulary Words both in class and at home in preparation for a quiz the first week of October.
