School Counselors

What is a School Counselor?

School counselors are certified/licensed educators who improve student success for all students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program. (ASCA, The Role of the School Counselor)

The three domains of focus are academic, social & emotional, and postsecondary readiness. School counselors utilize individual meetings, group counseling, and classroom lessons in order to meet the needs of every student. We also participate in crisis management, are the 504 case managers, and support periods of transition for all students.

Most importantly, we advocate for what is best for our students. This includes meeting with students, partnering with parents & all staff, and working in the background to ensure the best learning experience for all students. Each grade level is vastly different and we are thankful to have the support of our families, administration, and other educators while we support our students through these years.

Who is your School Counselor?

Every student is assigned to a school counselor by grade level. Our Counselors stay with the same class of students for all three of their middle school years.

How are School Counselors different than a "Guidance" Counselor?

Historically, the term “guidance counselor” was used to refer to counselors working in the schools. This term has evolved to “school counselor” as the scope of duties has changed and evolved. Although some schools still used the outdated “guidance counselor” term, the American School Counselor Association encourages the use of “school counselor” to more accurately reflect the role. (ASCA, Guidance Counselor vs. School Counselor)
The main difference in our current role is the focus on being proactive, data-driven school leaders and providing all students with education and support.
