The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind in Google Classroom

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

This week we will wrap up our Africa unit by watching a movie that embodies many important character traits such as perseverance, ingenuity, and hard work. This is a true story of William Kamkwamba, a boy living in Malawi during the great floods there in 2001, and his quest to save his village from famine after the grain fields were ruined. It’s really an amazing story, one that I know you’ll enjoy!

Africa SDG-NGO Project, Part II of II in Google Classroom

Africa SDG-NGO Project, Part II of II

For the second part of the project, you will create a non-governmental organization (NGO) with the goal of improving  life in your African country. The improvement can be focused on improving education, access to fresh water, better sanitation, combating climate change, eliminating infectious disease, or equality and justice.

Today, we will learn about NGOs and their functions. We will watch a short video about Operation Acacia, an Italian-based NGO that sponsored a project in Senegal in 2012. Operation Acacia addressed the issue of desertification and climate change through the planting of acacia trees. The trees helped replenish the soil with nutrients for farming, and the sap that came from tree bark gave farmers a substance called “gum arabic”, a key ingredient in manufacturing gel caps for pharmaceutical companies, and in processed foods including candy (Haribo Gummy Bears, for example). The gum arabic sales have now created a stable economy for villagers living in the dry Sahel and have helped reverse the effects of climate change.

Attached here is a template for your NGO, an example from a previous school year, and the link to the video.

History of Africa and the Problem with the Berlin Conference in Google Classroom

History of Africa and the Problem with the Berlin Conference

We can't begin to understand modern Africa without looking at the Berlin Conference. During this series of meetings in 1884 and 1885, the leaders of Europe decided how to divide Africa among themselves for control of valuable natural resources. By 1960, many of these colonies gained their independence and became the modern nations of Africa. However, the legacy of imperialism has left many of these countries still facing terrible economic, environmental, and political challenges.

Our Planet Earth: The Impact of Consumption on SUSTAINABILITY in Google Classroom

Our Planet Earth: The Impact of Consumption on SUSTAINABILITY

How does CONSUMPTION impact SUSTAINABILITY? Consumption of products and services impacts the environment in many different ways. For example, the things we buy contribute, directly or indirectly through the product lifecycle, to climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss and resource depletion on Earth.

As we continue to examine our "Human Footprint", we will look at a 2007 National Geographic documentary on the "mark" humans make on the earth throughout the average lifespan of human existence. Please follow the directions on this graphic organizer (I'll give you a paper copy to work on) and as you watch the documentary, take notes on the actual number of items we use in a lifetime, and write a reflection to the question asked at the end of the worksheet.
