PE ATTIRE
Sneakers are a must for safety in PE class. Students should be prepared with clothing that allows for the freedom of movement during PE class.
Students should also be prepared in the Fall and Spring for outdoor weather, such as having sweatpants and sweatshirts. Having extra sneakers and socks is recommended in case of wet grass. Being prepared for class may also include: asthma inhalers, knee braces, or anything else that is necessary for a student to participate in class activities.
MEDICAL EXCUSES
Students are expected to participate in all PE classes unless the following occurs:
1. A written and signed note from a parent/guardian is brought in to the nurse explaining an illness or injury.
2. A written and signed note is brought in from a physician to the nurse and PE teacher.
Any illness or injury that restricts a student from participating in PE for more than two (2) consecutive classes requires a note from the student's PHYSICIAN. The nurse will require a "return to play" doctor's note for any original note that doesn't have a return date on it.
CT Physical Fitness Test
Requirements - Students in grade 6 and 8 are required to participate in the CT Physical Fitness Test. Scores in grade 7 are not reported to the state but students continue to practice the components of the test.
Testing Elements
- 1 mile run
- Partial Curl Ups (Modified Sit-Up)
- Right angle Push Ups
- Sit and Reach (Hamstring Flexibility)
The mile run consists of four consecutive laps on the track.
Passing times can be found on the "Standards" form.
Students should be responsible for knowing their standard time which is based on gender and age. We encourage students to know their 'split times' for the mile run. A split time is the time a runner should take to complete each singular lap to attain their passing time. For example, a female age 11 should be able to run a mile in 12 minutes. The split times for this standard are as follows: lap 1 = three minutes, lap 2 = six minutes, lap 3 = nine minutes, and lap 4 = 12 minutes. To see the split times for each age and gender, see the "Split Times" form.
